L.E.D. Lighting options

L.E.D. Lighting options

What exactly is L.E.D. lighting?

LED stands for light emitting diode. LED lighting products produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. How do they work? An electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs and the result is visible light.

How long does L.E.D. lighting last?

The useful life of LED lighting products is defined differently than that of other light sources, such as incandescent or compact fluorescent lighting (CFL). LEDs typically do not “burn out” or fail. Instead, they experience ‘lumen depreciation’, wherein the brightness of the LED dims slowly over time. Unlike incandescent bulbs, LED “lifetime” is established on a prediction of when the light output decreases by 30 percent.

How are LEDs Used in Lighting?

recessed LED

LEDs are incorporated into bulbs and fixtures for general lighting applications. Small in size, LEDs provide unique design opportunities. Some LED bulb solutions may physically resemble familiar light bulbs and better match the appearance of traditional light bulbs. Some LED light fixtures may have LEDs built in as a permanent light source. There are also hybrid approaches where a non-traditional “bulb” or replaceable light source format is used and specially designed for a unique fixture. LEDs offer a tremendous opportunity for innovation in lighting form factors and fit a wider breadth of applications than traditional lighting technologies.

LED lighting differs from incandescent and fluorescent in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting is more efficient, versatile, and lasts longer.

LEDs are “directional” light sources, which means they emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and CFL, which emit light and heat in all directions. That means LEDs are able to use light and energy more efficiently in a multitude of applications. However, it also means that sophisticated engineering is needed to produce an LED light bulb that shines light in every direction.

Common LED colors include amber, red, green, and blue. To produce white light, different color LEDs are combined or covered with a phosphor material that converts the color of the light to a familiar “white” light used in homes. Phosphor is a yellowish material that covers some LEDs. Colored LEDs are widely used as signal lights and indicator lights, like the power button on a computer.

In a CFL, an electric current flows between electrodes at each end of a tube containing gases. This reaction produces ultraviolet (UV) light and heat. The UV light is transformed into visible light when it strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the bulb. Learn more about CFLs.

Incandescent bulbs produce light using electricity to heat a metal filament until it becomes “white” hot or is said to incandesce. As a result, incandescent bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat.

ComparisonWhy should I choose ENERGY STAR certified LED lighting products?

There are more lighting options available today than ever before. Despite that, ENERGY STAR is still the simple choice to save on your utility bills.

LED bulbs that have earned the ENERGY STAR are subject to very specific requirements designed to replicate the experience you are used to with a standard bulb—so they can be used for a wide variety of applications. As the graphic on the right demonstrates, a general purpose LED bulb that does not qualify for the ENERGY STAR may not distribute light everywhere and could prove to be a disappointment if used in a table lamp.

ENERGY STAR means high quality and performance, particularly in the following areas:

  • Color Quality

    • 5 different requirements for color to ensure quality up front and over time

  • Light Output

    • Light output minimums to ensure you get enough light

    • Light distribution requirements to ensure the light goes where you need it

    • Guidelines for equivalency claims to take the guess-work out of replacement

  • Peace of mind

    • Verified compliance with more than 20 requirements to address performance and labeling

    • Long-term testing to back up lifetime claims

    • Testing to stress the products in operating environments similar to how you will use the product in your home

    • 3-year minimum warranty requirement

And as with all ENERGY STAR products, certified LED bulbs are subject to random testing every year to ensure they continue to meet the ENERGY STAR requirements.

For more information on how to select an ENERGY STAR certified bulb for each application in your home, view the ENERGY STAR Light Bulb Purchasing Guide (PDF, 1.49 MB) or use the interactive online Choose a Light tool.

How to prevent weeds from growing in your mulch

How to prevent weeds from growing in your mulch

Are you tired of dealing with those annoying weeds that are consistently growing in your mulch? Of course you are! At times, it really can feel like an endless battle and at times it is. You get everything cleared out and looking pristine and then the very next day, there is something sprouting up that you did not plant. Frustrating? Absolutely. So what do we need to do to finally put a stop to this never ending supply of weeds? Let’s dig a little deeper and see what solutions we can find. We have compiled a list of a few things that will hopefully help to keep all of your landscaping and garden areas free of those pesky weeds.

1. Prior to installing mulch, make sure you do a very thorough job of getting rid of all the weeds you can find. Really try to take your time here and make sure you have scoured the grounds well. Also, remember that if you are pulling weeds by hand, you really will want to be sure that you get the entire root of the weed. It’s very easy to pull the weed and have it break off where the roots start. This will not be good enough to get rid of the weeds. You have to get the root! IF you are going to use a chemical weed killer, this is the time to do it although you really should try to use natural methods as much as possible & stay away from using chemicals.  Boiling hot water will have the same desired effect without the worry that comes with using chemicals.

2. This seems like an obvious one, but make sure you install and secure your landscape fabric prior to installing your mulch. Again, take your time and really make sure it’s laid down nicely and very secure in it’s position. Make sure you use some type of landscape fabric stakes. Don’t just assume that the weight of the mulch will be good enough because it definitely won’t be.

3. Make sure you buy a quality mulch. We have all heard the phrase, “you get what you pay for” and mulch is no exception. Don’t get the cheapest stuff. Yes, it does make a difference. You will want to look for shredded bark mulch, wood chips, cocoa hulls, or pebbles / stone.

4. Install your plants, but also try to use some ground cover as this will help to smother any potential weeds. If you are not sure exactly where you are going to plant everything, try drawing up a map so you can at least have a solid idea what it will look like when you are done and you will know exactly where to place everything so that it looks proportionate.

5. Install a brick border between your lawn and your landscaping. Not only is this going to look really nice, but it will also help to keep things where they are supposed to be.

6. Keep your lawn free of weeds as well. It’s much easier for your landscaping and garden to stay free of weeds if your lawn is free of weeds as well. Products like these will help you to keep your lawn pristine.

7. Try to only water specific plants. When you use a sprinkler that just gets everything wet, you are giving the weeds a chance to get established as well. This is not the easiest method to deal with, but it is something to consider.

Still having issues with the weeds growing in your mulch? or maybe you just don’t have the time nor energy to deal with it? Consider hiring a professional. They deal with these issues every day and will know exactly how to approach your specific situation. This will also free up some time for you to devote to things you truly enjoy!

Natural Pest solutions

Natural Pest solutions

Have you ever heard the saying “an ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure?” It basically means that a small amount of prevention will do much more good for you than a large amount of solution after something has happened. We can apply that saying to many different circumstances in our lives and our  gardening habits are certainly no exception. It will be less likely that we will be dealing with pest infestations if we stay on top of the little things consistently. Now, for some plants, that could mean daily attention is needed. For others it can be weekly or less. The overall health of your plants will be better if you give them better attention consistently. This will make everything much easier when you finally do come across some trespassers in the foliage!  Whether you are dealing with indoor plants, a greenhouse, or tending to your garden in the back, you will eventually come across some pests. It is just a matter of time. Here are a few natural pest solutions that are completely safe and natural to help you keep the bugs away.

  • When purchasing new plants at your local home and garden stores, be sure to inspect them before buying. It’s not uncommon to bring home pests in a new plant from the store.  Be sure to inspect any fresh cut flowers or clippings that you may bring inside from your own garden / landscaping as well.

    • Potted  plants that are left outside during the warmer months are vulnerable to bugs crawling into their soil. Inspect them before you bring them into your home. You may need to replace the soil as this is a common place for bugs to live. Be sure to check the bottom of the leaves as well.

    • Wash / clean the leaves of your plants every week or two. If possible, bring the plant over to your sink and spray all of the plant surfaces. Another option is to use a spray bottle filled with water. You may want to take the plant outside for this as it can get messy quickly. Try to spray the plant from all angles. Be gentle with everything, but also really try to wash the entire plant. It is much harder for a pest outbreak to happen when it doesn’t have a solid chance to get established. This will also improve your overall plant health and the look of the plant itself.  These spray bottles are technically for hair, but I think they work great for plants! I love the continuous mist. I think it really does well for cleaning your houseplants as well as watering the leaves.

    • Identify and isolate any infested plants as soon as possible. The sooner you spot any problems, the easier it will be able to deal with any issues that may come your way. When you find that one of your plants has signs of an infestation, move it away from other plants preferably outside of the home or greenhouse.

    • If it is a severe infestation, you may want to try taking a couple clippings to propagate & then toss the mother plant. It sucks to have to go this route, but it’s better than a total loss. If possible, take a few cuttings of the plant, root them, and hang on to the mother plant just in case you are able to save it. You may not be able to save it, but if you have a few clippings you will have an opportunity to keep that same plant going.

    • For small outbreaks, you may try dipping a q-tip or cotton balls in rubbing alcohol and then rubbing it on the outbreak areas of the plant. The stem. The bottom of the leaves. The area where the leaf meets the stem also known as the “leaf axil.” Be thorough. Be consistent.
